Points well taken.

As I said, I did not want to be mean or harsh, and I certainly don't want to make it a persoanl attack on him. Although I've never met him, everything I've heard is that he's as cool as they come (which is sometimes hard to come by in the music busines....or any business for that matter).

But, I feel strongly about my opinions on this one (in case that wasn't obvious from my previous post [img]redface.gif[/img] )

I also did not mean to imply that he's a total zero of a drummer (that Gadd rimclick lick is always worth "something," right? [img]wink.gif[/img] ), and my hat's off to him for what he's able to put on his resume, but I've seen him live with Chicago several times, and on video several others, and I just find it to be the drumming equivalent of someone scratching their nails on a blackboard...I just can't listen to it for very long.

"thrill of the kill" awesome...........Fee Waybill's disc Read My Lips is a must cd, Jeff, Jerry Marotta, JR, Tris and John Keane.

Okay, just to prove I'm not all bad....

I'm not ashamed to admit this (just forgot about it earlier during my rant).

I hereby admit that I've always dug the tom fills leading into the last section of "Hold On to the Night" by Richard Marx.

Hard to get past how COOL Tris is. I met him a few times and each of them was like he knew me all his life. Just an impressive personality.

The last time I saw Tris was at the Carlos Vega Tribute gig at LaVeLee. Tris played well, but I understand the "feel" thing maj61 discussed.

As for copping parts, I've discussed this many times. I've thought about playing covers and copping signature fills or grooves several times actually. Ironically, when it comes to covers, I feel you NAIL IT, but, when Steve Ferroni played to Jackson Browne's, "Runnin' on Empty" at the LaVeLee gig, he did NOT play Kunckles classic "SD/ BD combo" fill out of the last chorus. On the second set, he played a different fill. WHAT? That's like skipping Smith's classic fill in Journey's, "Separate Ways" or playing "Rosanna" without ghost notes, or worse, playing an 8th note groove!

Tris is cool!

Tris is heavy. Just check out "Who's Right Who's Wrong" on the Kenny Loggins album Keep The Fire . A beautiful lesson in orchestrating a drum part.
As far as Chicago goes,mja61, I can see your point a bit because there is no attempt made to cop any of Seraphine's vibe which was brilliant to me (being a child of the sixties). It's the same for me with Ricky Lawson barreling through Josie with Steely Dan whereas if you listen to Keltner's original version there's all kinds of subtlety and nuance. I think it's the age we live in. People want to play perfectly and in the process lose the vibe.

I'm a HUGE Tris fan and he is one of my biggest influences for sure. He's why I got my Tama kit in 1980. [img]eek.gif[/img]

I saw him with Kenny Logins back in 1982 and just KILLED. Tris HAS found the fountain of youth: Kauai. He spends a LOT of time at his house there when not on tour or doing sessions in LA.

Tan is relatively unimportant, really [& nominally risky later]...but physically in shape, you betcha...that's the ticket...& Tris has his punched. All the best to him. [img]graemlins/thumbs_up.gif[/img] [img]cool.gif[/img]

Yeah, tanning is overrated... Tris can't do the cool things that i can during a show cause he ain't pale-as-a-babies'-booty-white, like i am. I've seen 'Stomp' or 'Blast', where they use the black lights and the white marching sticks... i don't need the sticks, i just wear short sleeves and it looks totally dope. Cirque Du Soleil was going to use me as a clown to save on the costs of white make-up, and have me do naked backflips across the stage under the black light, but i need to practice.
Tris does have amazing time, so i have heard. Kenny said he finds a time and just LOCKS into it. Back in the Dec. 95 MD, Kenny mentions how he was editing together old live material of them and how they weren't using a click but Tris managed to get the takes within 1/10 of a second, and these are live gigs over the course of a couple tours... i can't imagine.
